Just after 12:00 A.M. Metro Firefighters responded to 5030 Cottage Way for a report of a structure fire.  When Firefighters arrived they found a working attic fire.  The occupants had already evacuated the home safely.

A second alarm was sounded bring a total of 27 firefighters to control the fire.  The fire was contained to the attic area of the home.  Most of the occupants contents were saved by firefighters removing or placing tarps over them.

The fire started outside the home.  The occupant cleaned the fireplace earlier in the day.  The ashes were thought to be cold and placed into a rubber county trash container.  The ashes smoldered for several hours before igniting the trash container.  The fire worked its way into the attic space of the home.

Every year several fires are started by placing ashes from either the fireplace or BBQ into County or City trash containers.  The ashes felt cool to the touch and it was assumed safe to dispose of them.

Area Fire Departments are urging everyone to take the ashes and place them into a metal container far away from any structure and let them sit for several days.  Before disposal water should be added to insure the ashes are safe to dispose. This is the second incident of this nature in one week.
