Question: What is a Ride-along?
Answer: An opportunity for a member of the public or other medical
professionals to receive first-hand experience and observe what
firefighters do as part of their daily routine around the fire station and
on emergency incidents.
These professionals may include:
· MICN's (Mobile Intensive Care Nurses)
· Physicians
· EMT students (Emergency Medical Technician)
· Paramedic Interns
· Firefighters
· Law enforcement, and
· Certain qualifying civilians
The primary role of the ride-along is to stay with and
observe the fire district personnel during emergency responses.
During such responses, you will be expected to remain on
the apparatus and in your assigned seat until directed to a safe
observation area by the Company Officer, Engineer or other fire district
personnel.
Ride Along hours vary, however the standard time is
between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Important policies to observe:
- Must be 18 years or older or
enrolled in a Regional Occupation Program.
- All ride alongs must submit to
a background check prior to the start of the ride along.
Exceptions to the background check include personnel from law
enforcement; fire service; licensed hospital personnel and District family
members (proof of occupation required).
The Operations Chief must approve all other exceptions.
Results of the background check must be sent to the EMS Division.
- Only one Ride-along per person, per
calendar year will be allowed.
- Comfortable work clothing is to be
worn during Ride-along. For medical personnel "scrubs" are
suitable. Levi's type jeans or sweats are not permitted.
- Work boots, leather or sturdy tennis
shoes should be worn.
- An "OBSERVER NAME TAG" must
be worn at all times.
- Ride-alongs are guests of the Fire
District and may be sent home at the discretion of a Chief Officer at
any time.
