Fire Place Ashes In Garbage Can Damages Home
January 6, 2002
2790 Lacy Way Sacramento County Ca. Just after 2:00AM Metro Firefighters
responded to a report of a garage fire on Lacy Way. When Firefighters
arrived they found a fully engulfed garage rapidly spreading to the living
portion of the home. A second alarm was sounded bringing a total of 29
firefighters to the scene to control the blaze.
The fire was brought under control just before 3:00 am. The family was
alerted of the fire by working smoke detectors. This enabled all of the
family to escape without injury. The firefighters were able to save a good
portion of the contents by placing tarps inside the home.
Fire investigators determined the cause of the fire to be attributed to
the homeowner placing fireplace ashes in the plastic County garbage can
inside the garage. Many time ashes are believed to be cold and placed in a
garbage can next to a home or inside the garage. The ashes can smolder for
several days, when enough heat is generated the plastic can and contents
erupt causing devastating results.
The structure sustained an estimated $160,000 in damage with an
estimated $20,000 in contents. The family will be displaced until repairs
can be made.
