Chemical Spill Closes Target Store In Rancho Cordova

Metro Firefighters were dispatched to a report of a chemical spill in the loading dock area of the Rancho Cordova Target store on Olson dr. When E61 arrived they reported that an employee had placed several containers of Liquid Chlorine in the trash compactor. When that compactor was activated, the product created a cloud and spilled outside the dumpster.

50 store employees were inside the store at the time of the incident, 11 were in the immediate area of the spill. 3 employees immediately started to experience nausea and burning associated to exposure to the chorine gas fumes. Paramedics evaluated the employees and transported them to area hospitals. A total of 10 employees were treated from the incident.

Hazardous Materials Teams arrived from the Sacramento Fire Department and assumed responsibilities for confirming the product and directing the clean up of the spilled chlorine. The store was closed until early afternoon.
