Muriatic Acid Spill Closes San Juan Ave In Citrus Heights
April 3, 2002 7:57 am Metro Fire responded to a vehicle accident on San
Juan Av and Sperry Dr in the City Of Citrus Heights. When Metro Engine 21
arrived they reported a large vapor cloud in the middle of the street as a
result of a vehicle accident.
The Street was closed with the assistance of the Citrus Heights Police
Department. A Hazardous Materials response team responded to confirm the
substance. It was later determined that the substance was Muriatic Acid,
used for pool cleaning. The trailer that was involved in the accident had
approximately 100 gallons of the product in the tank. An estimated 2
gallons leaked from the tank onto the street. Area businesses were advised
to "shelter in place" This meant to stay indoors until the spill
could be cleaned up.
A total of 3 Patients were evaluated and transported to area hospitals.
All three complained of respiratory irritation. All of the patients were
treated and released. The driver of the truck and trailer was not injured
from the accident. The road was closed for approximately 2 hours.
