Just before 3:00 A.M., Sacramento Metro Fire responded to a report of a house fire at 8141 Hearth Place CT. in Antelope, Sacramento County. Metro Fire Engine #26 and Battalion Chief #12 arrived to find a two-story home well involved with fire, and threatening adjacent homes.

A second alarm was requested bringing additional firefighters to assist in controlling the blaze. It was initially thought that the family of six was trapped inside the burning structure. Firefighters made an aggressive interior attack and while conducting a thorough search to find no one was at home. The father had taken three of his four children with him to deliver newspapers in Roseville. The mother of the children was out of town with the family's youngest child. The father stated that it was a miracle that his wife was out of town, or the family would have been asleep when the fire broke out.

Fire investigators determined the fire to be attributed to an overheated ceiling fan in the downstairs den. The fire moved quickly through the structure. The floor joist was completely burned through causing difficulty for firefighters working in the second story. The fact that the father acted responsibly and took his children with him instead of leaving them home likely saved their lives.
