Update On Fire Activity For Sunday June 9, 2002
Today has been a busy day for all firefighters in the Sacramento area.
High winds and low humidity caused for Red flag fire conditions. Last
night firefighters battled several grass fires in the Florin area as a
result of an arsonist setting fires in several different locations. The
fires started at 6:00Pm and continued until just before 5:00Am. Over 150
acres burned. Two outbuildings damaged. One Grass Fire Engine was damaged.
This morning a 25-acre fire was sparked in the Rancho Murrieta area.
The fire burned 40 acres and threatened structures for a period of time.
The fire was contained in less than one hour.
Just after 4:00 pm a fire started on the right shoulder of east bound
US 50 just east of Bradshaw Road. Several homes were at risk due to the
fire burning up through the fence line. Firefighters were able to access
the fire from both the freeway and Explorer Drive. The fire had made its
way in to two back yards, one yard had wood decking and the other with
dried tree trimmings and stacked wood. One home had fire involvement on
the siding. Fortunately the fires were controlled before more damage
occurred.
Minutes later a fire was reported off of Ione Road and Pony Trail Road,
just on the boarder of Amador County. At this time the fire has consumed
over three hundred acres of wild land. Structures are in the area and
additional resources have been called in to protect them. In addition CDF
has assumed command of this fire. Air support has been working the fire as
well as ground forces. No estimated time for containment at this time.
Metro Fire has added two additional crews as well as leasing a
Firefighting Helicopter. The helicopter will be activated until the
conditions improve. Metro Fire is looking for information on the arsonist
working in the south area. Arson Tip Line 1-888-322-7766
