 Arsonist Arrested After Attempting to Burn His Home

Friday morning just after midnight Metro Fire responded to a report of a residential structure fire at 2780 Randolph Avenue in the community of Carmichael

Firefighters arrived at the reported address and discovered a small fire inside of the living room that appeared to be intentionally set. The home did not sustain a great deal of damage as a result of the fire.

A short time later, while firefighters were still on scene, the occupant Curtis S BATES III (DOB 08-18-1958) returned to his residence. As a result of the investigation by the Metro Fire and the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department, BATES a registered arsonist was taken into custody for violation of the California Penal Code Sections, 451 (b) - Arson to an inhabited structure and 453 - Use of accelerant and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail.

Bates has two prior convictions of Arson one to a structure and one to a wild land. Metro Fire Arson unit has a steady increase of Arson investigations. Currently Metro Fire has investigated 241 fires with 131 listed as Arson just in the year 2002. Total fire loss is 18,765,000 dollars.
