Metro Fire responded to a reported wildland fire at 3:00 PM on October 2,
2002, located at Florin Road and South Watt Avenue. While fire apparatus was
in route a large column of smoke became visible and therefore additional
resources were requested. High-powered electrical lines down along with very
strong winds created concerns for the firefighters. Shortly after
firefighters arrived on Hedge Avenue the wind shifted directions, which then
immediately changed the firefighting tactics to structure protection along
the 7200 block of Hedge Ave. The wildland portion of the fire was controlled
within one hour of the incident. It took another hour to control the house
fire and provide fire protection to all homes in or around the area. Fire
apparatus remained on scene for several hours due to the strong wind
conditions and the need for extensive overhaul and clean up of the fire
area.
One civilian, a 16 year-old youth who was evacuating his own home, noticed
fire at the rear of his neighbor’s house and realized his neighbor was still
inside. The youth went into the neighbor’s house and woke the neighbor and
quickly assisted him out.
