Just Before 7:00 A.M. this morning the Sacramento Sheriffs Department responded to 7527 Cook Road Unit B located in the City Of Citrus Heights for a welfare check.  The Sheriff was alerted by a neighbor for a smoke detector sounding.  When Deputies arrived they forced entry into the Apartment and found a woman in her fifties near the kitchen sink.  The woman was badly burned and was determined to be deceased.

The Deputies requested Metro Fire and the Coroners office to respond.  Metro Arson Investigators determined the cause of the fire to be the woman smoking in a chair.  Her clothes caught fire.   The woman appeared to make an attempt for the kitchen sink and succumbed to the burns.

The Coroners Office will release the name of the victim pending notification of relatives.

This type of occurrence is common.  Area Fire Departments ask for the media to remind the public that when your clothes catch fire for any reason to STOP-DROP-AND-ROLL.  This procedure is taught to children at a very young age, but applies to anyone that finds them selves in this situation.

Thank you,
