8:20.A.M.  A 911 call was made reporting a house fire at 6804 Walerga Road in the Community of North Highlands.  Metro Fire responded as well as two Sacramento Sheriff Deputies Tom Koontz and Matt Peterson.  The two Deputies arrived first and found a home fully engulfed in fire.  They witnessed Douglas Fuller of Sacramento attempting to open the garage door that had heavy amounts of smoke coming from it.  The three men opened the door and saw a male attempting to make his was out until he collapsed.  The three men went into the garage and pulled the man from the fire.  A second victim was trapped in the back bedroom and the deputies assisted in removing the adult male from the room.

The male rescued from the garage has third degree burns on the front of his body and is listed in critical condition at UCDMC.  The other victim is listed in fair condition and is being treated for burns and smoke inhalation.  One Firefighter was transported for burns to his ear and neck area.  He was treated and released.  A family dog was found and transported by Metro Firefighters to an area Animal Hospital.  The dog is expected to recover from burns and smoke inhalation.

The two Deputies and Citizen were directly responsible for saving two of the victims from the fire.  Metro Fire commends these brave men for their actions!

The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental.  A 15-year-old girl was lighting a fire in the fireplace using newspaper.  The fireplace had combustible material around it.  The fire spread quickly and engulfed the house.  Seven people were home at the time of the fire.  The smoke detector worked and alerted the family.  This fire was preventable.  Area Fire Departments urge all to pay close attention to placing any combustible material near a heat source of any kind.

The house has a total loss contents.  Structural damage estimated a$140,000 with $20,000 for contents.
